Each year, the Nigerian Psychological Association (NPA) Fellows are invited to nominate exceptional individuals for Honorary Fellowship. The Honorary Fellowship is the highest honour NPA can bestow, it recognizes the recipient’s eminence within a specific field and their outstanding contribution more generally to the society.
On the recommendation of the Fellowship and Awards Committee, the National Executive Council, may bestow Honorary Fellowship on persons of eminence who may or may not be members of NPA, and who have made exceptional contributions to the society. Such honours are strictly limited.
On 24th August, 2021 during the opening ceremony of NPA’s Annual Congress and Scientific Conference, held in Enugu, Professor Afam Icha-Ituma, Vice-Chancellor, Coal City University was awarded with the prestigious NPA Honorary Fellowship (HFNPA) in recognition of his many accomplishments in the Nigerian University System and a continuing expectation for more to come.

Accepting the award, Prof Icha-Ituma said “I am thrilled to receive an Honourary Fellowship fromNPA. It is a great honour to be placed in such distinguished ranks as those of the past honourees, all of whom have been eminent Nigerians who have made stellar and sustained contributions to the society. I look forward to making broad ranging contributions to support the advancement of NPA’s activities in Nigeria”.
An extract from the citation delivered by Professor Ike Onyeishi, Chairman of the Conference Local Organising Committee, in proposing the award of Honourary Fellowship of NPA to Prof Afam Icha-Ituma, is specified below.
“Prof Icha-Ituma is an outstanding institution builder and resourceful intellectual. Prior to his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of Coal City University, he was the Dean of Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI), Ebonyi State, a position in which he championed effective governance, transformative teaching and multidisciplinary research in collaboration with his academic and professional service colleagues in the faculty. He has also served AE-FUNAI as pioneer Director of Academic Planning, pioneer Director of Information and Communication Technology Unit, pioneer Director of Centre for Entrepreneurship and Employability, pioneer Director Centre for Internationalization, linkages and global ranking, pioneer Dean Faculty of Education and member of the University Governing Council.

He is a Visiting Professor of Human Resource Management and Internationalisation at Lincoln University (UK) and has been a Visiting Research Fellow at Kingston Business School (UK), Visiting Fellow at the University of Leiden (Netherlands), Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow at the University of London (UK), Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow at the University of Lisbon (Portugal), Erasmus+ Visiting Professor at the University of Kent (UK) and Linnaeus-Palme academic visitor at the University of Gavle (Sweden)”.
