Coal City University, Enugu, CCU, hosted the 8th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Political Science Association, NPSA Southeast Zone. The event which held at the university’s PROFSCA’s auditorium, attracted political thinkers across the 36 states of the federation and members of Enugu State Legislative Council.
The Vice-chancellor of CCU, Professor Afam Icha-Ituma in his opening remarks lauded NPSA for its relentless pursuit of a politically stable Nigeria by the quality of research its members produce regularly. Such research output provide vital evidence that inform policy and aid decision making.
The Vice-Chancellor gave participants an overview of the direction his administration is going in making Coal City University, Enugu a choice university in the South East Nigeria, as part of its wider internationalization programme. He said that regarding its core activities of research, teaching and learning and community service, the university deployed customized technology to ensure CCU stays the top. The university thus built its own virtual facility, myCCU, that ensured faculty and students easily engage in technologically driven blended learning. He further stated that with this Coal City University’s fine blend of online and offline lectures, teaching and learning activities continued undisturbed during the COVID-19 lockdown. The university was able therefore to graduate its final year students as scheduled, enabling them to join the then upcoming batch of National Youth Service Corp members.
He also informed the audience that the university has an array of top academics who have generously signed into CCU Visiting Scholar, programme, at the last count, more than 66 professors and top researchers from Australia, United Kingdom, continental Europe and the United States. These collaborate with onsite CCU faculty in research, teaching, and community service.
Prof Icha-Ituma further said that the university secured 100% in all the courses it has so far presented to the National Universities Commission, NUC, for accreditation, enabling its two sets of graduates, thus far, to go for national service without hindrance. Very recently, he said, the Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board, (JUPEB), accredited Coal City University to run JUPEB programmes thus opening a wide door of opportunity for otherwise hopeless candidates to pursue their higher education dreams in Coal City University’s beautiful and safe campus.

The Chairman, NPSA Southeast, Professor Felix Asogwa, former dean of the Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences at Coal City University, while delivering his keynote address commended Coal City University for accepting to host the event. He further expressed happiness over the massive infrastructural transformation going on in the university especially its multimedia classrooms and auditoriums and the quality of lecturers from Ivy League universities employed in the University. He further stated that political scientists have a major role to birth the Nigeria of our dreams.

On hand to declare the conference open was the Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edward Uchenna Ubosi and some members of Enugu State House of Assembly. He praised the event organizers and the host, Coal City University, Enugu for the giant strides they are making towards improving education in the South East. He further lauded the Chancellor, management and staff of the university for the great job they are doing. He described Coal City University as a very beautiful place and a home for an all-round education in the State. He enjoined political Scientists to always look out to lead by example in every sphere of leadership they find themselves.

The event was also graced by captains of industry as well as community and religious leaders. It featured award presentation to distinguished personalities, including the Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, the member representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency, Comrade Chinedu and other eminently distinguished Nigerians.
